The Berlin Wall

The Berlin Wall, built on the night between 12th and 13th August 1961, was a physical symbol of the political and emotional divisions of Germany in other words it was a stark symbol of the human costof the Cold War. The Wall was built for two major reasons: first of all economic situations increased tensions between East and West Berlin; numerous well-educated people moved from East Germanybecause the education was free in East and it was cheaper to live in there. Naturally German students went to East German schools to get their education for free, then returned to work in West Germanywhere they could earn more money. West Germany was not happy to see this number of people leaving the East. The life in the West was much better than in the East, as a consequence of many people hadsuffer under repressions of the Communist party in East Germany. The second reason were political problems “After the World War 2 Berlin was divided into four sectors. The largest sector was the Russiansector. The Western sectors belonged to France, Great Britain and USA. After Nazi Germany surrendered, the four allied countries signed a treaty called the Potsdam Agreement, which determined theborders for Germany and Berlin.”
The construction of the Berlin Wall began in 1961; the borders between East and West Berlin were closed,along with all the rail stations. East German soldiers guarded theborder while workers began constructing barbed wire fences. The construction began at approximately 1 a.m. The total border length around West Berlin was 96 mi/155Km; the border between East and WestBerlin had a measure of 27mi/43.1Km;and the border between West Berlin and East Germany has a size of 69mi/111.9Km. The construction had plenty effects. It separated many relatives as well asfriends,and visiting back and forth was difficult through the 1960s. The barbed wire was replaced by a 3.6 high wall.
