The Brooklyn Bridge
The Brooklyn Bridge is one of the oldest suspension bridges in the United States. Completed in 1883, he crossed the East River to connect Manhattan to Brooklyn.
In1802, New Yorkers were already asking a bridge across the East River. But it was not until 1869 that construction really begins, 67 years after the beginning of the political and technicaldiscussions.
Directing the work should go to John Roebling, an engineer of Prussian origin whose project was chosen due to its many innovations. But even before the work began, it wascrushed by a foot boat and died three weeks later as a result of his injury. This is his son, Washington Roebling, who hired work. But the curse did not stop there and in 1872, he suffered adecompression accident that left him severely paralyzed. His wife, Emily Warren Roebling, became the intermediary between him and his workers as he watched the progress with binoculars fromhis bedroom.
The site was a hassle and complications were at the height of what was, at the time, a real technical challenge. No fewer than 27 persons lost their lives during the 14 yearsthat lasted the construction of the Brooklyn Bridge. Completed in 1883, this bridge was then the largest suspension bridge in the world. Opened to traffic May 24, 1883, he was taken in asingle day by 1800 vehicles and 150,000 people at a cost of 3 cents passage. A success! The bridge connects Manhattan and Brooklyn, which were once two separate cities. May 30, 1883, a weekafter the bridge opened, a rumor that the bridge was going to collapse caused a panic which caused 12 fatalities.
Today, the Brooklyn Bridge is experiencing traffic on two levels, one forvehicles and one for pedestrians and cyclists. Nearly 150,000 vehicles cross the bridge each day. To walk is a great pleasure for the people of New York because the view of Manhattan's beautiful
