The movie “The Color Purple” starts off with Celie a poor, uneducated, 14 year old black girl being constantly abused and raped by her adoptive father, Alphonso. He gave Celie atotal of two children but took them away from her. Eventually, Alphonso ends up offering Celie as a bride to Mr.__, who just wants Celie to be his new assistant in the household. Nettie, Celie’s sisterruns away from Alphonso and goes to Mr.__’s house to take refuge. Eventually Mr.__ kicks Nettie out of the house because she refused to please him sexually. When Nettie leaves she promises Celie towrite her back but Celie never heard from her again and assumes she is dead.

Shug Avery, Mr.__’s lover, falls ill and he set Celie to be Shug’s nurse until she got better and eventually the twowoman fall in love with each other and for the first time Celie knows what it is to enjoy friendship, romance and sex. Since Shug learned that Mr.__ was abusing of Celie she decides to stay in the hometo not leave her alone. As Shug and Celie’s relationship gets closer they discover the reason they haven’t heard from Nettie is because Mr.__ has been hiding all of Nettie”s letters in the trunk of hiscar. When Celie found this letters she realizes she has been abused for a long time by Mr.__ and leaves him, heading off to Memphis with Shug for a new life. Nettie’s letters shocked Celie andtransformed her since she learned the truth of her whole life reading those letters.
One of the things Celie learned was that Nettie had met Reverend Samuel, who had adopted both of Celie’s children, wentto Africa with them to work as missionaries. She also learned from the letters was that Alphonso was not her biological father and that the house he lived in was property of Celie and Nettie sincetheir mother died.
