The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie
“Common sense, in so far as it exists, is all for the bourgeoisie. Nonsense is the privilege of the aristocracy. The worries of the world are for the common people.” This quote was written as criticism of American social classes by critic George Jean Nathan. It holds a vast magnitude of disliking of the different social classes; people hold a hatred forthis quote because as it was said foolishly and to my opinion, ignorantly. There would be no point if I said that I don´t think that this is wrong because it is what people think and it is just such an ignorant thought in today’s standards. My focus here is to take you to the point as why I’m writing about this, it is because, in Honduras, the country I was born in, as well as in most countries highlevel status circles exist and maybe it could be civil here but it is not a pretty sight in Honduras. The difference of culture is the main topic to be discussed, the contrast between daily routine here in Boston and my daily routine over in Honduras. The barrier that divides the social classes is more ever-present even though imaginary it is as it was built with cement and gravel and gettingthicker by the minute, so there are other rules that apply in both places.
My country Honduras, and to be more specifically, Tegucigalpa, its capital is where I call home. I was born there and raised and I had a lovely childhood just filled with happy and fun memories. Since I am talking about comparing two different places and my daily life I should flash forward a few years. Tegucigalpa is a smallcity and has its many quirks, pros and cons, like any other place in the world. The thing is people over there are very close minded and that’s because most of them have not had a proper education or left the country. I have been blessed to be in a very small group of the population that went to private school and could travel freely, because there is so much poverty. So when I say there is morepoverty than people with money, is what I think created an imaginary wall of resentment that have everyone tense. There is a lot of crime since people are in despair, kidnapping as well. The dying middle class is getting smaller as the years go by, so the situation is you either have money or you don’t. So that’s why there are many things over there that are part of my life that may seem weird inothers but are necessary. A regular day in Tegucigalpa would be just wake up to have lunch probably in my house or with acquaintances, then maybe go to have coffee with friends, maybe go to get my hair done and/or my nails done, and at night probably wine and dine and maybe go out to a club. Not that everyday is the same, I like spending time in my house with my sisters and mom. The thing is thereare rules that need to be followed since it is dangerous over there I have a driver and bodyguard which is standard fare in Honduras. Every parent wants their children’s safety and also the best of everything for them. Also another normalcy here is in your house you get everything done here by the help. It is rare to see a house here if you have the means for there not to be a maid and in someinstances more than one. I mean they practically are your second mothers, they raise you, they cook for you, they feed you, they clean up for you, and most importantly they love you and you love them back. They become part of your family and there is a special bond formed, that is at least my experience with my maids and my drivers. I love them and appreciate them so much.
The thing is that peoplein this very exclusive group, unfortunately can be very envious and greedy. The major problems for my country is that there are people who are just corrupt and they steal, mainly government officials and high positioned CEO´s and they never get punished because the police is also in the ´money talks´ mantra. This is what wrong with my country it is just too much corruption by the same people...
