God is omnipotent; God is wholly good; and yet evil exists. According to Mackie, the problem of evil arises fromthe fact that there seems to be a contradiction between these three propositions. The contradiction emerges if we add two additional premises: Good is opposed to evil (i.e. a good thing alwayseliminates evil as far as it can), and there are no limits to what an omnipotent thing can do.
