The Fall of Fujimori:
He was president of Peru from 1999-2000. He is an international fugitive. He is wanted by Interpol for corruption, kidnapping and murder.
There are many difficult problems in Peru, which he finds it challenging.
A billion dollars every year on the exportation of cocaine. But there are also problems with the economy: hyperinflation of 7000% was eating away at people’spockets (corruption).
Two main groups of terrorists are called MRTA and Sendero Luminoso (shining path). They were advancing since 1980.
Sendero were in a position where they could come into power.
1990 (The rise): He was an unknown agronomy engineer, japanese immigrants. he was very popular. He designed Fuji-mobile a moving truck with a platform and microphones. I would reach every corner. I wouldvisit the shantytowns. He would also visit the poor neighborhood where one could sense a lack of presence by the state.
His slogan: un presidente como tu (president like you). He was the man who doesn’t look like us. For disadvantaged people, Fujimori were seen much more like those Indians in a very profound cultural sense.
The Fujimori Tsunami: before 2 months of election, his popularity inthe polls starts to increase by 1-2% daily. He achieved 54% of the votes.
After he has become a president, he has tried to keep family unify. His wife was a civil engineer. He was mathematics professor. He eats breakfast with his family everyday preparing by him.
Hardest part for his children: getting used to level of security, lived under pressure.
There were 3 attacks on the presidential palacewhere they lived. The terrorist attacks presidential palace guards.

Why did the shining path resort to violence? Why religious people pray?
It was a totally integral part of their world view. To them it was crucial that the armed struggle would be used to just demolish all the social, moral, historical structure upon which the old order was built. They sawthemselves as the torchbearers of world revolution.
Abimael Guzman “ president Gonzalo” found at the shining path for communist revolution. They were responsible for over 35000 deaths.The propaganda of shining path was to create a myth around Abimael Guzman so people would idolize him, as if he were a powerful god. He was trained in style of pol pot.
People would listen to the message ofShining path. Fujimori starts building roads, schools, and clinics. He began visiting the most dangerous part of Peru. People are familiar with action of Shining Path and MRTA, which is criminal. He offers a half million dollars for whoever brings forward Guzman.
Carlos Orellana: fujimori’s press secretary said that Fujimori has made it clear since the first day that there would be no negotiations withterroism. In order to win, method of intelligence will be used, which are different from method of dirty warfare and repression. Part of his defensive apparatus was Montesinos.
Vladimiro Montesinos: the man from sin (national intelligence service), He was formal army captain and was arrested for selling secret to CIA. Upon his release he has become a lawyer specialized in defense of drugtrafficking In 1999 campaign, he suppressed a potentially deficit tax problem for Fujimori. He brought Fujimori information about terrorism, drug trafficking and military. He did dirty work, which included death squad operations.
They were groups set up by intelligence service to exterminate certain people through illegal means, such as people they consider as terrorists. Before Montesinos, this grouphad never acted that brutally in Lima. But because Fujimori and Montesinos felt sure of power they controlled, they committed these massacres believing they would never be discovered.
Fujimori used death squad, which is illegal. There was a high level of violence on part of terrorism and part of enforcement groups.
