Are Americans greedy? This seems to be the common thinking in light of our most recent economic developments. However, I think the American people areamong the most charitable beings around the world. The generosity of Americans is revealed in many ways. It’s evident thru philanthropic foundations, education system and humanitarian aid.
Firstly,people in America make enormous contributions to charities by providing economic support to philanthropic organizations. For example, from 2004-2011 the Red Cross have helped 1.7 million people toprevent HIV through their “Global HIV Program”. As well as helping to provide approximately 40% supply of America’s blood needs be receiving blood donations from about 4 million donors. Another exampleis The League Against Cancer. This foundation has served more than 54 thousands cancer patients from different countries. It has also provided free medical care to Florida residents afflicted withcancer for over 35 years. In addition to The Red Cross and The League against Cancer, the March of Dimes is another of many philanthropic institutions which help the needy. 31 million dollars have beinginvested by The March of Dimes in research to study premature birth, birth defects and infant mortality. There are about 80,000 families who get benefits with their Neonatal Intensive Care Unitprogram.
Secondly, Americans are very generous with international students. International scholarships are available to bright students around the world from the US government, an example is theFulbright U.S. Student Program, and it grants 1,800 awards annually in all fields of study to people from underdeveloped countries. It has also helped students of over 155 countries over time. Besides thegovernment’s scholar aid, corporations extend their helping hand. Coca Cola Inc. has a scholarship foundation which supports over 1,400 college students each year. It gives 3.4 million dollars a year...
