The Giver
Comparative Essay
We will be explaining the similarities and differences between the book and the play on the novel The Giver. It is a dystopian children’s novel by Lois Lowry. The novelfollows a boy named Jonas going through the twelfth year of his life. The society has eliminated pain and struggle by converting to “Sameness”, which has also eradicated emotions from their lives.Jonas becomes the “Receiver of Memory”, the person who stores all memories of the time before Sameness. He meets “The Giver” the previous receiver and is confused at first, but soon learns of knowledgeand real life. Then Jonas has to decide to stay and live a shallow life or leave and live a full life.
The way the novel begins in the book is that there is an announcement that a plane has passedover the community. That there is nothing to be worried about because the pilot corrected his flight path, but he would have to be released. To be released meant to be given a lethal injection thatwould kill you in a matter of minutes, but we don’t discover this until further in the novel. The start is basically the same in both situations.
During the Ceremony in the book they presented Gabrielthe baby that had been staying with the family while he got better but they didn’t present him in the play. The group of twelve’s was more detailed in the presentation of their new jobs and theyskipped Jonas for a very long time and made him really nervous in the book. In the play they only mentioned two twelve’s and Jonas was barely shaken up about being skipped.
Jonas asked The Giver how wasit that people were released, he asked where they went or what happened to them. They saw a video of a young baby twin being released and Jonas couldn’t believe that “Release” meant killing people.The novel and the book were pretty much the same in that part and Rosemary’s release was described in the same way in both occurrences.
