The Gospel “Eternal life”
This gospel that we have this Sunday cannot be clearer than this when it comes to letting us know what it requires to gain eternal life or to enter into the kingdomof God. One of the things that we all need to be grateful for to Christ himself is that he did not put us in a guessing game on how and what does it takes to enter heaven. Jesus was very clear on howwe will be able to accomplish not just once but many many times in the gospel. The gospel today is one of them. These are the words of Jesus himself: “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’
willenter the kingdom of heaven,
but only the one who does the will of my Father in heaven.
What does this mean for us? It means that it is not enough for us to believe that there is God in orderto merit eternal life, it is enough for us to belong to the Church in order to be saved. One is not assured of heaven if the only component of one’s faith is an occasional conversation in prayer –crying out to God “Lord, Lord” when it’s only convenient for the person or if the only time that a person remembers God is if he/she is confronted with a big problem or in dire need. One may argue that anoccasional life of prayer is better than nothing. Well, Christian life is not supposed to be minimalistic and mediocre because God has really went beyond his comfort zone in order to give ussalvation. Authentic faith is not seasonal nor it depends on our mood Intellectual belief in the existence of God cannot be translated or synonymous to salvation. Christ himself said that “it is the one whodoes the will of the Father will enter heaven”. DOING THE WILL OF GOD – Christ himself said..it is not just knowing God’s will but truly putting our effort on it, making it a conscious part of ourlives. Doing - requires acting upon what we truly know about our faith and what it requires of us according to our own unique state of life or according to our own vocation. The gospel uses the...
