THE GRAMMAR TRANSLATION METHOD.
MAJOR CHARACTERISTICS

1) Classes are taught in the mother tongue, with little active use of the target language.

2) Much vocabulary is taught in the form of lists of isolated words.

3) Long, elaborate explanations of the intricacies of grammar are given.

4) Grammar provides the rules for putting word together, and instruction often focuses on theform and inflection of words.

5) Reading of difficult classical texts is begun early.

6) Little attention is paid to the content of texts, which are treated as exercises in grammatical analysis.

7) Often the only drills are exercises in translating disconnected sentences from the target language into the mother tongue.

8) Little or no attention is given to pronunciation.

CARACTERÍSTICAS PRINCIPALES
1) Clases se imparten en la lengua materna, con poco uso activo de la lengua meta.
2) Gran parte del vocabulario que se enseña en forma de listas de palabras aisladas.
3) las explicaciones largas, elaboradas de las complejidades de la gramática se dan.
4) Gramática establece las normas para poner palabras juntas, y la instrucción se centraa menudo en la forma y la inflexión de las palabras.
5) Lectura de textos clásicos difíciles se comienza.
6) Se presta poca atención al contenido de los textos, que son tratadas como ejercicios de análisis gramatical.
7) A menudo, los ejercicios sólo se ejerce en la traducción de frases inconexas de la lengua de llegada en la lengua materna.

GOUIN AND THE SERIES METHOD

Gouin spent a great deal of of time observing his nephew and other children how the acquired language and cmae to the following conclusions:

a) Language is a means of thinking, of transforming perceptions into conceptions.

b) Children use language to represent their conceptions.

c) Language is a means of thinking, of representing the world tooneself.

The series method taught learners directly (without translation) and conceptually (without grammatical rules and explanations) a series of connected sentences that are easy perceive-

Gouin gastado una gran cantidad de tiempo de observación de su sobrino y otros niños cómo el lenguaje adquirido y CMAE a las siguientes conclusiones:
a) Ellenguaje es una forma de pensar, de transformar las percepciones en las concepciones.
b) Los niños usan el lenguaje para representar sus concepciones.
c) El lenguaje es una forma de pensar, de representar el mundo a sí mismo.
El método de series enseñó los alumnos directamente (sin traducción) y conceptual (sin reglas gramaticales y explicaciones) una serie de frases relacionadas que son fácilesde percibir-
















THE DIRECT METHOD

The basic premise of the direct method was similar to that of gouin´s Series Method, namely, that second language learning should be more like first language learning-lots of oral interaction, spontaneous use of the language, no translation between first and second languages , and little or no analysis of grammatical rules.

Theprinciples of the direct method are the following.

a) Classroom instruction was conducted exclusively in the target language.

b) Only everyday vocabulary and sentences were taught.

c) Oral communication skills were built up I a carefully traded progression organized around question-and-answer exchanges between teachers and students in small, intensive classes.

d) Grammar was taughtinductively. (in a general way)

e) New teaching points were taught inductively. (in general way)

f) Concrete vocabulary was taught through demonstration, objects, and pictures; abstract vocabulary was taught by association of ideas.

g) Both speech and listening comprehension were taught.

h) Correct pronunciation and grammar were emphasized.
