The interwar years (1920s and 1930s) were highly relevant forAfrican-American art history. From the roaring twenties to the Great depression it was a time where a remarkable movement in African-American culture succedeed after many decades of suffereing throughimprisonment, unfairness and oppression by the White man Though emancipation and the Civil War (1861-1865) abolished slavery, African Americans continued to face widespread discrimination,particularly in the South. African Americans began to unite together in order to demonstrate their strong beliefs of racial pride and self-identity. African Americans took advantage of the great opportunitiesgiven in New York City and began searching for more individual freedom, equality and self-expression trhough their work (mostly artistic and literary). This new movement started influencing stronglysocially, culturally, economicly and politicly from the current issues back in that day.
