Holocaust and Aftermath:

Holocaust, a word of Greek origin meaning “Sacrifice by Fire”
Holocaust is a term use by historians that describe the massacre of 6 million Jews by the German Nazi regimeduring World War II. Victims of the Holocaust have led to the establishments of Holocaust Museums. The Holocaust was directed by the Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler, aided by a vast bureaucracy. About700,000 people died of disease and starvation during the next two years. After some 450,000 Jews had been sent from Warsaw to death camps, the last 60,000 decides to resist. Most Jews were captured orkilled and the ghetto reduced to rubble.

Hitler outlined his anti-Semitic program in Mein Kampf “My Struggle” (1), his farrago of memoirs, prejudices, and ill-conceived scientism. On coming to powerin 1993, he implanted this plan. It evolved from legal disfranchisement of the Jews to legalized murder. Later legislation added disabilities designed to drive Jews out of Germany. Many refused toleave, convinced that Hitler’s rule would soon end. The German authorities also established numerous forced-labor camps, both in the so-called Greater German Reich and in German-occupied territory, fornon-Jews whose labor the German sought to exploit.

Nazi- sponsored propaganda was circulated widely. Jewish books were burned. Physical persecution commenced with orchestrated anti-Jewish riots,on the infamous ‘’Night of Broken Glass” (1), of Nov. 10, 1938. At last some 30,000 Jews were arrested and imprisioned. During the era of the Holocaust, German authorities also targeted other groupsbecause of their perceived “racial inferiority’’: Roma (Gypsies), the disabled, and some of the Slavic peoples. Other groups were persecuted on political, ideological, and behavioral grounds, among themCommunists, Socialists, and homosexuals.
