The Importance of Being Earnest Review

Most of Oscar Wilde’s plays have been made into films; this is the case of “The Importance of being Earnest” which is amassive criticism of the Victorian society.

Oliver Parker directed the Importance of Being Earnest 2002 film, and it differs in some points from the originalplay. Some of them chronological and scenes added to it, yet they were not significant in the course of events.

The story turns around John Worthing (ColinFirth) and Algernon Moncrieff (Rupert Everett). Every time John (Jack) travels to London he changes of name. The story revolves around his lives and how the fellin love with some relatives.

One of the things that stayed true to the original play was the usage of language, which was witty, funny and comical, as wellas the critical view of society and individuals of the time.

One of the most obvious differences is that the play takes place primarily in rooms, while themovie takes plays outside, which help us to understand better how English society was at that time.

Another of the differences between the movie and the play isthat, the film adaptation develops the relationship between Dr Chasuble and Miss Prism, while the play hints that they have feelings for each other. The playdoesn’t focus in their relationship, while the movie ends with them marrying. This is an example of how different plays have been consumed by the romantic comedystyle.

In my opinion, everyone in this film adaptation did a good work. Although some things were readapted they were successfully used in this version.
