The importance of studying History
1. Using History in order to know the past. The positivism indicates that the only purpose of studying History is to know the past without relating it with ourpresent and our world. It only narrates data in a chronological way, presents facts without joining them to any historical development.
2. To guide our action. Thucydides (460-395 BC) was thefirst person to provide History with the purpose of guiding our actions by revising the facts that already occurred. This idea believes that considering certain facts known constitutes a guide ofbehavior for any time that something similar happens; even though it is well known that rarely same things occur in the same way.
3. To understand our present. Knowledge and comprehension of the pastare basic to understand the present; the History is not conceived for judging the past but to understand it. History is supposed to provide comprehension on social development; this “historicalconscience” allows us to participate of our own development taking into consideration the facts already studied.
4. To legitimate the domination of the government groups. This tendency is well usedby the dominant classes and groups of power, in order to justify their privileges and preserve their force. The State controls the past and its interpretation. Every time a different social movementwins, tends to reorder the past and interpret it according to their political ideals.
5. To create a national identity, unite the community and grow the patriotism. When the origins areexplained, History allows us to comprehend the bonds uniting our communities. Every nation has created a common History to tie their social groups, helping to consolidate a national identity.
