Anderson police dog euthanized after being shot in the face

An AndersonPolice Department dog was euthanized this morning after sustaining a gunshot wound Saturday while chasing a man fleeing police.
Magnum, a Belgian malinois, was shot in the face on Saturday in pursuit ofa robbery suspect. He went into surgery Saturday night, but was put down this morning after being unable to recover.
"It's a very emotional loss," police spokesman Sgt. Joel Sandefur said at a pressconference Monday.
Magnum and his handler, Officer Matt Jarrett, were pursuing robbery suspect Joseph Turner, 22, after he held up a PNC Bank in Anderson. Police said Turner then fled the scene intoa bean field, where Magnum was released to locate the suspect.
Magnum was a few feet in front of Jarrett when he was shot.
"He may have saved (officer's) lives," Anderson Chief of Police LarryCrenshaw said. "The dog did it's job."
This is the second dog the Anderson Police Department has lost in three weeks. Kilo, another Belgian malinois, mistook an officer as an aggressor and was shot duringa police standoff in July.
Sandefur said it's going to cost $20,000 to $25,000 to replace the two dogs, which includes purchasing the dogs, training and upkeep.
