The kilt is nowadays, very similar to a skirt, but it has a long history behind itself
All started in the 16th century, when it being used in Scottish Higlands. The origin of thekilt is a long dress, with a belt in the middle, to cover all the body. At the beginning, it only was used by the citizens of north Scotland. But in 19th century, it became morepopular and it started to be used by a lot of people in Scotland
In 1746 the Scottish lost a battle and the kilt was forbidden and it was used by the British army, because it waseasiest than a trousers because it had no buttons or belt to undo.
With the time, it has been modified until the actual form, only the lower part.
Nowadays, the kilt is a symbol ofthe Scottish pride, and the designers are trying to make it more modern, using different materials, like the leather, or with other designs, without squares… today it’s a very populararticle of clothing, and its price is not so excessive.
With the kilt, they don’t use underwear, and if you say that the kilt is a skirt, probably they will be angry with you.With the kilt is habitual carry a Sporran because the kilts have no pocket, and the Sporran is used like a purse or to store personal items. The sporran is like a bag, but this iscarried on the waist.
The sporrans are made of leather o hair and with silver’ ornamentation.
There are different types of Sporran:
The day sporran= this is the simplest and it’sused in the day to day. They are made from brown or black leather.
Dress Sporrans= they are bigger and they have more ornamentation. They were used in the 18th century, andnowadays they are obsolete.
Horsehair sporrans = as it name indicates, they are made of horse hair. They are used by pipers and they move from side to side when the piper walks.
