Who owns the media?
Never before has there been such aconcentration of power in the hands of so few people. It has been estimated that less than 500 billionaires own more than half of the world’s wealth. Many of these people have either made their fortunes inthe media industry or used their wealth to control a part of it. They have learnt how to create a market. They have attracted consumers who have bought into their ideas about beauty, femininity,masculinity, success, happiness, love and sex about how to make friends and influence people.
The hard sell
The media sell a product to a market. The product is us, audiences. The market is otherbusiness- advertisers. A successful media company is one that attracts many people to its outlets.
Monopoly
A vast empire of broadcasting, music, films and publishing joined forces with one of the world’slargest Internet providers, all fed to consumers through Time Warner’s cable network. This multinational corporation has the power to choose what they want to show. The problem such business mergerspose is that they result in one corporation forming a monopoly – complete unshared control. The unique advantage of having power over the media is that challenging opinions and opposing views can beprevented from getting a hearing.
Television
It has been estimated that the average person in Britain will spend about eight years of their life watching television. Before the age of fourteen theaverage child will have seen about 18,000 deaths, usually murders, on their TV screen. Many people are increasingly concerned about the massive influence television has, particular on the young....
