The next morning, Rosanna Spearman goes into the garden with
Penelope. She hears Franklin Blake tell Sergeant Cuff and
Betteredge that he’s not interested in her. Rosanna is deeply hurt
by Franklin’s words and she looks miserable all morning.Betteredge comes to talk to Rosanna but she says that she wants
to talk to Mr Franklin.
At two o’ clock in the afternoon, Rachel leaves to go and stay with
her aunt and uncle (Godfrey’s parents) in Frizinghall. After she
has left, Sergeant Cuff wants to speak to Rosanna. He and
Betteredge follow her to the Shivering Sand. But they are too late.
Rosanna has already walked onto the dangerous sand andit has
pulled her under. Sergeant Cuff and Betteredge can’t save her.
‘She has killed herself,’ says Betteredge.
