The Trinity is the central mystery of our faith. It’s a glimpse right into the heart of God. St. Augustine gave us the most compelling of many possible explanations: he compared the Trinity to humanlove. Think of Adam, alone in the garden with all those animals. Something’s missing. None of those animals can return his love.

When she is created, Adam cries out in delight because Eve’s likehim. She’s not just another animal. He loves that likeness. He also notices that she’s different from him in her sexuality: he loves the difference, too. A true lover loves his beloved as his equal indignity, but also loves his beloved for the beloved’s own sake. This is to love both the sameness and the difference.

Both sameness and difference are important when we’re talking about love. St.Therese writes about his at the beginning of her autobiography. She struggled to understand God’s choice of giving greater gifts to some souls than to others. Some souls are great: powerful,accomplished, talented. She was not one of them. Then she understood. The smaller the creature, the further God has to stoop to love it, and the more dramatic and powerful God’s love is shown to be, preciselyin the degree of difference between the lover and the beloved.

In one fell swoop little Therese gets it: Love delights in whatever the beloved is, and in our case, the littler we are, the moredifferent we are from God, the more He has to bend down to us; and the more his greatness and power are shown. The littler we are, the more God can be God. Therese discovered that the huge differencebetween humankind and God is not an obstacle, but a help to knowing God.
