The Outsider

In the novel A Bridge to Wiseman’s Cove by James Moloney, the short story Only Ten by Alan Baillie and the movie Edward Scissorhands, the main theme is being an outsider.
An outsider,is a person who does not belong to a certain group, but over a period of time may find his or her place in society. All these stories show the life of an outsider and how difficult it is. Two of thethree stories reveal what an outsider who has to pass through to get accepted. On the other hand in the movie Edward Scissorhands the outcome of the movie is the opposite. This essay will discuss thecharacters in these texts, their similarities and differences. Carl Matt, a boy with a twisted life and lack of confidence, is the main character of the novel A Bridge to Wiseman’s Cove, Hussein, anoutsider for very different reasons than Carl and who is the main character of the short story Only Ten and Edward Scissorhands who is the main character of the movie Edward Scissorhands and is of coursean outsider mainly because of his hands.

Carl, a fifteen year old boy, is the main character in the book A Bridge to Wiseman’s Cove. At the beginning of the story, onething is made clear, Carl is not an ordinary boy. James Moloney tells the reader about Carl and his twisted life. He is a very analytical boy who does not engage in conversation with others because ofhis lack of confidence. There is a part in the book when Carl sees a beautiful girl, the problem was that as much as he wanted to say hello, his lack of confidence was pulling him back. He is,therefore, a boy with very low self esteem but his life improves as he finds his place in the community.
