Another important objective was winning the peace after the war.There were fundamental ideological and cultural differences between the western democracies and the Soviet Union. Also,Churchill had a determinate view of the communists and he never forgot the Moscow’s pact with Hitler in 1939 and the invasion of Poland.
Stalin, because Russia was invaded by Germany twice, wasprimarily concerned with securing the western borders. Churchill was opposed to Soviet domination of the Eastern Europe; he thought the Anglo-American union would be the most powerful power in the worldwild.
Washington wanted a free trade for the post-war world. However, Britain preferred to maintain the preferential trading system with the colonies. Roosevelt insisted on the necessity of theequality of people for the post-war structure. Consequently, Churchill proposed a diplomatic solution in order to not lose the British Empire: “the agreement on trade paid due regard for our presentobligations”. Hay que añadir que, Churchill had admitted England needed America’s help to win the war. But, in addition Churchill was suspicious about America acting unilaterally in order to get a strongerstatement on the post-war world agreement.
“The right of all peoples to choose the form of government under which they will live” was other point of confusion. President Roosevelt was referring tothe world free trade but Churchill was thinking just about the fascism, no the colonialism.
