Third Semester.
“The Raven” written by the gothic writer, Edgar Allan Poe, is a poem about a man grieving over the death of his beloved,Lenore. Considered to be one of the most famous poems in American Literature, its haunting musicality has been scaring people for more than a century. Poe uses various devices in the poem such as end rhyme,internal rhyme, alliteration and meter. The result of the use of all these devices is a scary and haunting poem that is able to creep the audience.

Once the reader starts the poem, he immediatelyunderstands the mood that the poet sets. “Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary” is the first line in the poem. The poet carefully chooses his words to create the mood in thepoem. Sad or depressing words like “midnight dreary” and “weak and weary” set up the sad like, depressing mood of the poem.

If a person tries to imagine a toy, an animal or any kind of object thatkeeps repeating the same sounds over and over again without stopping, he or she would get scared. This is exactly what Edgar Allan Poe tries to do in his poem, and he achieves this by using the rhymescheme in the poem that has an “a-b-c-b-b-b” sequence. Poe repeats the same end rhyme in the last three lines of each stanza to create that non-stop repeating sound, thus managing to make people feeluncomfortable.

Just as end rhyme is used by the poet to create uncomfortable sounds, he also uses alliteration to create sounds about the setting in the poem. For example “And the silken, sad,uncertain rustling of each purple curtain” (line 13) has the “s” sound rhyme at the beginning of each word. The repetitive “s” sound can be imagined as a curtain moving with the wind. “So that now, tostill the beating of my heart, I stood repeating-’Tis some visitor entreating entrance at my chamber door” is another example of the use of alliteration to create the setting.
