2)Executive summary Background: Several studies have been conducted to assess therelation between the prevalence of common mental disorders and sociodemographic variables, focusing on income or income inequality on an individual or neighborhood level as possible explanatory variables. However there is not a complete agreement between researchers. In addition, just a few studies have been conducted on symptoms for CMDs and sociodemographic variables in Santiago de Chile. In thepresent study, the relationship between the most prevalent anxiety disorders (generalized anxiety disorder and phobias) and symptoms associated (worries, anxiety, phobias, economic worry as main symptom) with sociodemographic variables (Income and income inequality as well as age, employment status, length of unemployment, health insurance, type of housing, housing ownership and education) wasexplored. Methods: This study was based on a cross-sectional household survey performed by Araya et al (2001) in Santiago de Chile. The data was obtained by the authors and corresponds to a probabilistic sampling design, where the 35 boroughs of Santiago were taken in consideration. 252 sectors and 4693 households were randomly selected with a proportional probability to the size of the sample units....
