“The Second Coming”
“The Second Coming “by William Butler Yeats it a short poem published in 1921. The title of this poem is connected to the Second Coming ofChrist, as predicted in the book of Revelation in the New Testament of the Bible. The poem gives out a description of how the second coming of Christ might be like. The author describes that theworld is not in control and that the “best lack of all conviction, while the worst are full of passionate intensity”, in other words badness is increasing more than goodness. In the poem the SpiritusMundi: “Spirit of the World” is in darkness because of the chaos among humankind and they have been waiting for 2000 years for The Second Coming of Jesus in hope to be save from the chaos, but at theend of the poem we see that their hope is vanish. Their hope fades away because they see that The Second Coming is something totally different from what they were expecting. The Second Coming thepeople see shows “a shape with lion body and the head of a man, a gaze blank and pitiless as the sun”. This shows that something with darkness has come to humanity and it has not come to give out freedombut rather more destruction, something they were not expecting.
The motivation behind this poem is to warn humanity of what might lie ahead if we do not change the direction society continues totake. This poem was publish by Yeast right after the end of World War I to show how evil is controlling the innocence of man. Yeast writes this poem in order to warn humankind to change their currentpath to prevent The Second Coming from being something opposite of what they expect to be like.
