World's best Robotic Hand gets better .
November the 1st, The Shadow Robot Company introducedtheir newest Dexterous Hand: the C5 Hand. The brand new Hand will be sold to the University of Bielefeld. Where it will be used for research into robotic learning skills. The C5 hand is the new andimproved version of The Shadow Dexterous Hand series, a series of robotic hands with all the features of a human hand. The former version was the C3 Hand. Yes, they smartly skipped the C4 version, itcould have been rather explosive. So What makes the C5 Hand so much better than the C3 version? The springs that controlled the adductive movements of the fingers have been replaced by four Air Muscles.This means the old movements of the spring returns have been replaced by smoother motions with a lot more precision. There is also a better routing of the tendons in the wrist and the thumb. The handdoes not only guarantee a better performance it also looks a lot more sophisticated as well. All the external tubing, the air intakes, have been redesigned so now, they are contained within themanifold. At the moment the hand is sold to universities and researchers investigating humanoid robotics, robotic manipulation and neurology such as Carnegie Mellon University and NASA. Also The ShadowRobot Company is planning to implement the hand in factory automation, rehabilitation and teleoperatitions like bomb disposal, nuclear activities and repair in difficult circumstances. Hugo Elias, one ofthe robotics engineers at The Shadow Robot company is very pleased with the new Hand.
