The Sister
Why are dramatic monologue so very important? Because it is impersonal, in a way, the poet choises a character, it is the loss of romantic subjectivity. Poet like T.S Eliot will revive the dramatic monologue because it is impersonal, in the sense that there is no poetic self, there is no possibility of identification between the poet and the speaker.
Why it is popular during theVictorian age? For two reasons:
The first reason is that there is no distance Victorian drama before Oscar Wilde.
Victorian poets wanted some kind of new dramas, with interaction to Shakespeare, but how can we revive Shakespeare in an age were really commercial play were considered horrible? We have to find a kind of a quintessential Shakespeare, what is quintessential'sShakespeare? The monologues? Hamlet's monologue, Othello's monologue, Richard's monologue, or the dialogue? Victorian poets wrote monologues and this was in a way a kind of officializing, because Shakespeare, during the Victorian age beggining to became a kind of myth. We have Baldolatry, “l'idolatria del baldo”.
In dramatic monologue many Shakespearean themes are included in the genre, like revenge, blood, incest.
The sisters
The sisters is a monologue by Tennyson that is more Jacobian than Jacobians. It is a real concentration of love, sex, revenge, it is a bit outspoken. We read the sisters in a paradistic way, the witness is the Tennyson reading still recording how funny it was. Tennyson makes fun himself, this is the root of modernism because it is impersonal. Tennyson never makes fun“In Memoriam”, this is because he is someone else that speaking.
1 Stanza: We have some elements coming from the ballads: two sisters, some kind of illicit relationship, we have kind of medigol sex “the wind is bowing in turret and tree”; the line “they were together, and she fell” come from T.S. Eliot in one of his poem “Burbank”. Eliot will typically of Victorian poem. Do you know what afollen woman is? it is a Victorian idea of woman that trasgress sexual code, she can be an unmurried woman that have sexual relation. It is an important theme during a Victorian age because it is quintenssentialy other, she is different from the Victorian idea of woman that is angel in the house. The follen woman is the fallen angel, also important socially because in this period there were a lot ofprostitutes. Christina Rossetti has been working for many years to rescue young follen woman (Urania Cottage was a place where young women were rescue). Fallen woman is important both in thematical and social way. “They were togheter and she falls” means they have sex so she falls. The speaking sister in a jackobian and Shakesperean sense wants to revenge the family honor.
2 Stanza: thespeaking sister is also speaking in strongly religion terms, that to the Victorian listeners were familiar especially because of the evangelical preachers, Brinson and Tylor. The terms are very strongly, apocalictic and extreme fondamentalist. “Whole weeks and months..lay in wait.” This girl decides to replace the sister (substitution between dead sister and living sister).
3 Stanza: typicalseduction themes. We have witness, revenge, sex, this kind of themes are very important especially in the late Victorian age because it's a tabù. We have the theme of incest, Byron invented literary incest. We have two sisters in love each other (maybe), we have two sisters in love with a man (maybe), we have a man in love with two sisters (maybe).
4: The coexisting of love and hate will be anothercontent feater, think of Wuthering height, think of Oscar Wilde, and also of many other novels and poems that we read together.
5 : Notice the repetition of the wind is blowing in turret and tree (1 stanza), the wind is howling... (2 stanza), the wind is roaring... (3 stanza) and so on... it is a climax, it is the mirror of mind of speaker, she going mad very likely and Tennyson reflects the...
