“The Storm” By: Kate Chopin
The story develops within anpowerful setting. The title of the story reflects the setting of the tale because not only does it describe what is going on outside of the house, but also supplies the reader with an indirect reference to what is happening inside of the house. Chopin's portrayal of the storm's setting reinforces the plot's main elements through descriptive imagery that coincides with the characters’ emotionsthroughout the story. The main characters in this story, Alcée and Calixta in particular, each make their own best of the situation, by reliving their past, as the storm hits. The storm is described as a violent one, with thrashing winds and blinding rain. The cracking of the thunder is frightening to Calixta, and jump-starts an emotional reunion between her and Alcée which leads to another storm, this one in Calixta’s personal life, because of the betrayal that is portrayed in the story.
Kate Chopin uses element of the setting to inform the reader of what might happen in the story on the environment and in Calixta’s personal life. An example of this could be at the beginning of the story when Calixta feels the heat but is not aware of the storm coming this could be used as an example offoreshadowing the arrival of Alcée. The setting occurs in two places in Calixta’s home where she was waiting for her husband but because of the storm she is alone and then encounters Alcée, and in the store where Bobinot and his son were waiting for the storm to pass. This would help understand the situation that would later on occur in Calixta’s home and can give a hint of what might happen there. By leaving Bobinot off the house in the stormy weather, Chopin is letting the reader know that something might happen with Calixta during the pass of the storm.
The atmosphere is used to build the tension that is caused by the two storms, intriguing the reader of what may happen and relate more easily to the situation that is happening in the house. The dark and stormy weather creates a moodin the story that is also dark. The shift in mood happens in stride with the approaching storm. As the storm begins, Alcée arrives. The mood becomes darker and darker as the storm worsens. The best example of that is when Alcée is approaching the house the storm is gaining force, (p.111 Kate Chopin). That could be a sign of what is going to happen later on as the storm develops. The fact thatthey have not seen each other for a long time could give a clue of why Chopin writes the approaching of the storm at the same time as Alcée’s arrival. The atmosphere that Chopin creates could be related to the “two storms” the literal and symbolic, because as the storm grew stronger the situations and the confusion in Calixta’s home was getting bigger, for example when she was with Alcée almostkissing, but she was worried about her husband and child ( page 111- 112 Kate chopin), she was confused because she wanted to know how they where, because she still cared about them and wanted them to be okay but she still has having an adventure with Alcée. As the storm outside develop and gain strength the storm in Calixta’s life gets bigger also.
