1 NARRATOR: Soldier came marching a country road, one, two one two. He had his knapsack on his back and a sword at his side for he had been to the wars and now he was going home. But then he met upwith an old witch on the road.

2 WITCH: Good evening soldier what a fine sword you have and what a big knapsack you are a proper soldier to be sure now you shall have as much money as you want.

3SOLDIER: I thank you old witch





4 WITCH: Do you see that big tree?You must climb up to the top and there you will find a hole in the trunk, slide through it and you will come deep down inside the tree. I will tie a rope around your waist so I can pull you back upagain when you shout for me.

5 SOLDIER: What am I to do down in the tree?



6 WITCH: Fetch money.
Now listen to me once you reach the bottom of the tree youwill be in a large hall. It is quite light there for over a hundred lamps are burning. You will see three doors you can open them, the key is in the lock.
If you go gentleman, people told you aboutall the festivities going on in their town and about their king and what a pretty princess his daughter was.


7SOLDIER: Where can she be seen?8 WITCH: She can’t be seen at all everyonesaid. She lives in a large copper castle surrounded by many walls and towers no one except the king dares to go in or out of it because a fortune teller has said that she will marry a common soldierand this does not please him.
