The Writing Process
Chapter I : Exploring
Topic: your topic or subject is what your writing about. When you think about your topic, ask yourself the following questions:
* What specialknowledge do I have about the topic
* What subtopics are most relevant to me
* What aspect of the topics do I care deeply about
Audience: your audience is your intended reader. You can keepyour readers interested by adapting your tone and vocabulary. You can keep your readers interested by adapting you tone and vocabulary to suit them.
Porpose: Your purpose is your reason forwriting. Sometimes you may have more than one purpose. Ask yourself the following questions: entertain, persuade, inform?
General and specific purpose:
General purpose- to inform
Specific purpose- toexplain
Exploring Estrategy:
After you determine your topic, audience and purpose, try some exploring strategies to help get you ideas flowing. Four common strategies are freewriting,brainstorming, questioning and cluttering. Find the strategy that works best for you.
When you use exploring strategies
You can use the exploring strategies at any stage of the writing process:
* Tofind the topic
* To narrow a broad topic
* To generate ideas about you topic
* To generate supporting details
Freewriting: gives writer the freedom to write without stiping for a setof period of time. The goal of this exercise is to record the first thoughts that come to the mind. If you run out of ideas, don’t stop writing, fill the pause with phrases like “blab la bla” or“What alse can I write?” And when you write, don’t be concerned with word choise, grammar, or spelling.
Brainstorming: Is like freewriting, except that you create a list of ideas and ypu can take thetime to stop and think when you create a list. As you think about the topic, write down words or phases that come to mind.
