The Widows´Son Essay
The Widow´s Son is a short story written by the short story writer and novelist Mary Lavin. It takes place in a rural town in Ireland where lack ofcommunication makes a hard-working widow loses her son, who is the beat of her heart.
Mary Josephine Lavin, (10 June 1912 – 25 March 1996), was a noted Irish short story writer and novelist. She isregarded as a pioneering female author in the traditionally male-dominated world of Irish letters. Her subject matter often dealt explicitly with feminist issues and concerns at a time when the primacyof the Roman Catholic Church and its abuses (e.g. The Magdalene Laundries) impinged extensively on Irish society.
Mrs. won three Guggenheim Fellowships, the James Tait Black Memorial Prize forfiction, and a number of literary awards, including the Katherine Mansfield Prize, in 1961. Some of her stories written during this period, dealing with the topic of widowhood, are acknowledged to be amongher finest. Some of her principal works are: Tales from Bective Bridge 1942, The Long Ago, and Other Stories, The Becker Wives, story of a widow´s son, a Single Lady, the Patriot Son, The Great Wave,and The Stories of Mary Lavin 2 volumes, In the Middle of the Fields, and Other Stories.
The Story of the Widow ´Son is a story with two endings where a poor and working widow ,in a rural town,makes a lot of sacrifices to raise her son, Packy.She raises hens, sells cabbages and eggs to feed and keep him in the best school. She loves her son and she is very proud of him; for he is veryintelligent and a good son. As the school is several miles away from her house, she always waits at the gate for him. One day, she sees him coming down the hill very fast on his bike to tell his mother hehas won the scholarship, but in the roadway he finds a lot of hens and trying to dodge them he crashes into the ground and dies.
