Thirteen
The movie thirteen shows the crucial adolescent period as well as the changes that it implies to a thirteen years old girl called Tracy. At the beginning of the story, Tracy is presentedas a sweet and obedient girl who stands out for being a good student at school. The beginning of her high school education marks the critical transition from childhood to adolescence. It appears therebelliousness and the want of popularity as her main motivation to change. Throughout the movie Tracy is showed as a consistent dynamic character because she undergoes changes through the relationshipwith other characters and based on her motivation of popularity and acceptance.
First of all, tired of being mocked of her clothes by some of her fellows Tracy decided to change the way she usedto dress. Only in that way could she attract attention from Evie who was one of the most popular girls at school. Evie represents everything that Tracy suddenly wants and needs to be, so she could doeverything to be her friend. As a result, she stole the purse of a woman in order to have money, buy new trend clothes and demonstrate Evie that she can be one of them. Since that moment, Tracy alongwith Evie undergoes different situations and changes. Not only does she start dressing suggestively and wearing make up, but she also starts taking drugs and having sex. In the story, Evie acts as afoil character because she is the contrast that helps reveal the new personality of Tacy: at the beginning Tracy is obedient and no popular while Evie was popular and rebellious, but Tracy feelattracted by Evie people’s perception.
The relationship between Tracy and Evie is built over the want of both being accepted in a society and having what the other have. For instance, although Evie is themost popular girl at school and everybody wants to be with her, she feels alone and without affection from anybody.
