Thomas Cole Paintings
As seen is class, Thomas Cole’s paintings described what was happening in the 19th century. Those beautiful paintings aretruly the best work of arts. I’ve decided to go over all the paintings. The first painting that came up called Savage State was a painting that made me feel a sense of insecurity of how the“wild and untamed” natural environment was seen. It also gave a feeling of a new force conquering peaceful land areas.
The painting called Pastoral State made me feel more relaxed and peaceful,as there was bright and light colors and nature seemed to be more controlled by men. This painting shows progress of a new civilization. As much as we see less untamed land, I believe thatnature is still in control.
The third painting called Consummation of Empire was to show that men have taken control over nature and the advanced technology men have created. Progress hasconsistently increased of this period of time. I felt like the painting made me think that it was a time where everyone was busy and it was very crowded.
The forth painting called Destruction ofEmpire is when men have come in terms to use violence and war to obtain power. It made me think of very violent times. Nature has become no part of human interests. Civilization has reached itspeak point and now destruction is the only way to disentangle the makes they have made.
The last painting called Desolation basically shows use how nature has bloomed again, but this timewith human structures still involved. It made me feel very calm, but a calm that I felt when something bad has happened to me. The colors made it feel quiet and isolated.
I can agree thatprogress is good, but as the saying “Everything that goes up must come down”. I believe that we surpass an extent where we cannot control and punishment is the only way to fall back to square one.
