CAN
Used to indicate physical or mental ability Used to indicate possession of a specified power, right, or privilege Used to indicatepossession of a specified capability or skill.

1.) Permission:

Can is commonly used in speech to ask permission.  It is also more commonly used in questions and negative sentences. See note belowregarding its usage both formally and informally.
Examples:
Can I smoke here?
You can use your cell phone in the restaurant patio. 
You cannot go in there now. He's busy.




Uses:
If yousay that you can do something, you mean you have the ability to do it, or you have the knowledge or skill to do it.

2.) Request:
Can is used informally in speech to make a request.
Examples:Will you smoke outside please?
Can you smoke outside please?
I'd like you to smoke outside please. 

Definition:
The quality of being able to do something, especially the physical, mental,financial, or legal power to accomplish something.
Ability:
Use can or could (past tense) to indicate physical ability.

Examples:
High-speed connections can download large music files quickly.Dial-up (telephone) connections could download music files slowly.
Smart phones can connect to the Internet.
Older telephones could only call other telephones.

MAY
Permission:
Giving permission,making requests and offering suggestions require the speaker to be aware of levels of formality. Use may to ask permission.
Examples:
May I smoke here?
You may use your cell phone in the restaurantpatio.
You may not go in there now. He's busy.
