Puede definirse al turismo como el conjunto de las acciones que una persona lleva a cabo mientras viaja y pernocta en un sitio diferente al de su residencia habitual, por un periodo consecutivo que resulta inferior a un año.
Tipos de Turismo
Turismo de Descanso, o de sol y Playa: El turismo convencional, conocido también como el modelo de "sol y playa", es unproducto propio de la sociedad urbana e industrial cuyas características principales son entre otras un turismo de gran escala, concentrado desde el punto de vista de la oferta y masificado desde el punto de vista de la demanda.
Turismo Científico: El objetivo principal del viajero que elige este tipo de turismo es abrir más sus fronteras para la investigación en esta área, ampliar y complementarsus conocimientos.
Ecoturismo: El ecoturismo es un nuevo movimiento conservativo basado en la industria turística que Jones, 1992, define como viajes responsables que conservan el entorno y sostienen el bienestar de la comunidad local. Se acompaña por códigos éticos y un enorme grupo de viajeros internacionales, estudiantes, pensadores y el apoyo de los gobiernos de algunos paísesindustrializados.
Turismo de Aventura: El turismo de aventura es otra de las modalidades del turismo alternativo, y sin duda alguna una de las formas que mayores expectativas genera a su alrededor, quizá por el término mismo que evoca, o bien por un cierto misticismo y tabúes que se han generado en su entorno.
Turismo Cultural: Corresponde a los viajes que se realizan con el deseo de ponerse en contactocon otras culturas y conocer más de su identidad.
Turismo Histórico: Es aquel que se realiza en aquellas zonas cuyo principal atractivo es su valor histórico.
Turismo Religioso: a diferencia de todos los demás segmentos del mercado turístico, tiene como motivación fundamental la fe. En la actualidad las ciudades santas que históricamente han sido objeto de peregrinaje -como Jerusalén, LaMeca o Roma- siguen siendo importantes puntos de referencia del sector.
Turismo Gastronómico: Otra de las motivaciones al momento de desplazarse puede ser el deleitar el paladar y conocer los platos típicos de las regiones.

Cultural Tourism: These are trips made with the desire to get in contact with other cultures and learn more about their identity.
Historical Tourism: It is that which is made in those areas whose main attraction is its historical value.
