To kill a mockingbird

The story takes place over a period of three years during the Great Depression in the old fictional town of Maycomb, Alabama. The narrator is Scout Finch's six-year-old who lives with her olderbrother Jem and their father Atticus, a widowed middle-aged lawyer. Jem and Scout befriend a boy named Dill who is visiting in Maycomb during the summer and stay at the home of his aunt. The three childrenare terrified, yet fascinated by his neighbor, "Boo" Radley who has a morose character. The adults of Maycomb avoid talking about Boo and very few have seen in years. Children feed their imaginationwith rumors about the apparitions of Boo and the reasons why it remains hidden, and elaborate fantasies and plans on how they might encourage him to leave home. After two summers of friendship withDill, Scout and Jem begin to receive small gifts that someone placed in a tree near the Radley house. Several times, the mysterious Boo makes them small presents to children, but their disappointment,never appears in person.

A charge him Atticus defending a black-skinned man named Tom Robinson, accused of raping a young white woman named Mayella Ewell. Although many of the people of Maycombdisagree, Atticus agrees to defend Tom in the best way possible. Other kids make fun of Jem and Scout because Atticus takes the position, and call it "black lover." Although his father warned him not to,Scout is tempted to defend the honor of his father through a fight. Atticus, on the other hand, must face an attempt by a group of men who want to lynch Tom. Scout, Jem and Dill manage to thwart thisthreat when they appear on the scene and manage to disperse the mob to make them understand the situation from the point of view of Atticus and Tom.

Because Atticus does not want the children towitness the trial of Tom Robinson, Scout, Jem and Dill watch him in secret from a balcony. Atticus can prove that both Mayella like her father Bob Ewell, the town drunk, lie about their charges. Also...
