Religion has played a major role in the U.S.A ever since it became a separate and an independent country. Although there have been a number of changes in religious attitudes and practices since the early days of colonialisms and Puritaninsms, religion is still a major force in U.S culture today. Although there are over a hundred different religious in the United States at present, morethan half of those questioned in a recent survey declared themselves to be of a protestant faith. Including in Protestantism are Baptists, Methodists, Presbyterians, Lutherans and Episcopalians. Of the remaining Americans almost 30 percent are Catholics and about 2 percent are Jewish. In New York city there is a larger Jewish community that in Israel, so in specific areas of the United States onewill find a predominance of one religion that may have relatively few if any members of that religion in another area. There are also Muslims, Buddhists, Hindus and several other religious groups well represented, especially in the Metropolitan areas of the country. One of the most controversial issues involving religion in the United States regards what is known as the separation of church andstate.

The American constitution clearly states that religious worship and governmental activities shall not be intertwined. In spite of this throughout much of the 20th century, many public schools held prayers in class, and students and their teachers celebrated various religious holidays. Recentcourt decisions forbidding such practices have motivated some parents to send their children to private schools that are exempt from such governmental restrictions. Whatever a person’s religious or spiritual beliefs might be, it appears that the United States is still basically a country of believers. A 1990 survey found that over 80 percent of those polled claimed to believe in God and almost 70percent stated that they engage in religious ceremonies and rituals on a regular basis.
