Persuasion in Thomas Paine’s “The Crisis, No. 1”
In “The Crisis, No. 1” (1776), Thomas Paine uses persuasivetechniques to move his audience to take action toward American independence from Britain. Thomas Paine first states, “I am as confident…that America will never be happy till she gets clear offoreign dominion.” (Pg. 109). Paine is using his credibility as an unhappy American who feels suppressed by the British Empire. As he is speaking to people like him, he can assumethat they will also be unhappy until they are free from the rule of the British. Paine next states, “‘Well, give me peace in my day.’ Not a man lives on the continent but fully believesthat a separation must…finally take place, a generous parent should have said, ‘If there must be trouble let it be in my day, that my child may have peace.’” (Pg. 108). Paine istugging at the heartstrings of Americans in this statement. He is saying that they can’t be selfish and try to avoid war in their time, and they need to go to war for the sake of theirchildren. Finally, Paine states, “Howe, it is probable, will make an attempt on this city; should he fail on this side of the Delaware, he is ruined.” Here Paine is using the logic thatthe British general Howe will likely lead an attack on Americans. If they can be prepared and stop him, however, then he would be ruined, and the Americans could take a huge victory.Paine contributes to America’s independence by persuading the colonists through credibility, logicality, and emotional reasoning, and this document did become a key factor in theAmerican Revolution.
