THE ADVENTURES OF TOM SAWYER
CHAPTER 9
THE PIRATES
In this chapter, Tom tried to escape to St Petersburg because he thinks that Becky doesn’t love him. In the way he met to his friend Joey who was walking away to the town too. Joey talk about to die together but Tom convinces him to escape to Jacksons Island as pirates: “Let’s be pirates, he said”.
Tom said pirates fight other pirates,find buried treasures and sink ships to the bottom of the sea. Yes, said Joey and ask Huck to join to them.
At two o’clock pirates were in the island. They made one tend with old sail and they lit a fire and cooked some meat and corn. After that they lay down next to the fire.
The next morning they swam in the river and play and fish and cooked when they were hungry. They were very happy.
But thatnight, they missed their families and places nobody said nothing. Suddenly there was a loud noise in the river. They run to the river and saw a steamboat firing the gun over the water looking for a body. Then Tom discovered that the people were looking to them. They were important people now.
Tom had an idea and he convinced them to stay one more day and come back after. Other boys accepted andthey all together enjoy the day.
CHAPTER 10
A FUNERAL AND A TRIAL
The people of St. Petersburg come to a church for a funeral of the three good boys: Tom, Joey and Huck. Some of them cried and others remembered as helpful boys. Suddenly, the three dead boys appear into the church. Everybody stood up. This was Tom’s wonderful idea. Aunt Polly grabbed Tom and the Harpers grabbed Joey, Tom andhis Aunt Polly grabbed Huck. Huck was not happy. He did not like people kissing him. Tom was very happy. This was the best day of his life.
The next morning Muff Potter’s trial started. Tom and Huck waited out of the courtroom for two days and they heard the same thing: Muff Potter is guilty of murder and he will hang.
In the trial all witness said that Muff Porter was the murder. His lawyerdidn’t ask them any question and people were angry with him. But finally he said that Mr. Potter was drunk when the crime happened and that’s the reason for to plead guilty. But now he doesn’t plead guilty. There is another witness: Tom Sawyer.
Everybody was surprised and looked at Tom while he walked into the courtroom. Mr. Potter’s lawyer asked Tom to tell everybody his story. Everybody made silencewhen he starts to talk. At last he told that Mr. Potter wasn’t the criminal. It was Injun Joe. Suddenly Injun Joe jumped out of the window and he ran away.
CHAPTER 11
BURIED TREASURE
After the trial everybody in St Petersburg talked about Tom. The judge said he was a fine young man and Becky smiled and said lets be friends again. She invited him to a picnic to celebrate her birthday.
Nextday, Tom met Huck and said they didn’t find any treasure on the island and he said that he wanted to find any one. They took two shovels and went to the Haunted House. This house was empty, broken, dirty and old. There were holes in the roof.The garden was untidy and the fence was broken.
The boys came into the house and because the sunny day they lost afraid and walked round the empty rooms. Theygone upstairs and let out their shovels on the floor.
Then they heard a noise and saw two men: one stranger and Injun Joe. Both men were talking about to do a job and then run to Texas with the money. Injun Joe moved a stone on the floor and pulled out a bag where he took some coins and gave to stranger. After that when he tried to bury the bag again in another place he found a box with goldcoins. Thera was a buried treasure in the Haunted House.
Stranger said that they don’t have to do that job because they found a treasure but Injun Joe said that he didn’t need money, he wanted revenge. Then they took the money and left the house to bur in other place.
The boys heard the conversation and Tom was very worried about word revenge because he spoke at the trial.
