Flora and Fauna:

Flora y fauna

De acuerdo a la naturaleza árida y semi árida de la Región de Atacama, se advierte una continuidad biótica tanto de especies de flora y fauna del Sur, como de otras propias de las regiones de Tarapacá y Antofagasta.
Las precipitaciones escasas, las neblinas o ”camanchacas” costeras y la progresión en altitudes y variaciones detemperaturas, son factores que condicionan la cubierta vegetal en la Región, la que presenta una estratificación con la altura, y desde los valles más húmedos a los sectores desérticos ínter fluviales.
Respecto de la flora, y comenzando por la zona costera, se observan especies como algas, de alto valor comercial como luche, huiro y chascón. Luego en la faja terrestre costera crece sin dificultaduna vegetación xeromórfica o jaral costera, y algunas especies de cactáceas columnares y suculentas. En los sectores cercanos a las partes bajas de los valles y cercanas al mar, y con niveles freáticos elevados se hacen presente especies como la brea, doca, totora y junquillos entre otras.
Más al interior, por los mismos valles, es posible encontrar chilcas, cola de caballo, hinojo y juncos, y...
