Earthworm’s characteristics:

Earthworms, also known by their scientific name lumbricus terrestris, belong to the kingdom animalia, phylum annelid, class clitellata, order haplotaxida and suborderlumbricina. These animals can grow up to 30 cm long; live in dump soil habitats that must have a pH above 6 and salt below 0.8%. Earthworms lack of lungs and breathe through their skin. Unlike manyanimals that exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide across their skin, however, earthworms do have a circulatory system to carry these gases to and from deeper tissues. This property allows them to growrelatively large. They are hermaphrodite which mean that one worm have both female and male sex organs. But as they cannot fertilize themselves, they need to mate in order to reproduce. One worm feelsthat another one is coming and in the case that it is a potential mate, he will start to search in the area with the tip of his body until he runs into the other worm. Then one pair of setae, that arelike bristles, attach and hold both worms while mating. After the mating and fertilization occurs a cocoon is released and hatch in 30 to 60 days. But sometimes they can remain for years. They preferrainy days because the wet ground allows them to move without the fear of drying put and dying.

Earthworms lack of eyes and nose, but they can sense light, by its primitive brain that, apart fromcoordinate muscular activity of each segment, processes sensory information from light-sensitive and touch-sensitive organs in head and tail. They move away from light and will become paralyzed ofexposed to light for too long (1 hour).
They also can still live frozen solid. Any form of ground cover helps mediate the freezing and allows higher survival through the winter. So worms can survivealmost everywhere. Earthworms flee from tiller vibrations. If chopped in half, they attempt to regenerate. Tilling the soil reduces populations, but not because it kills them.
