Wales attracts over 8 million staying visitors annually, as well as 30 million day visitors, and the reason for its popularity are not hard to find. We can start by mentioning some magnificientmountain and coastal scenery. Although it is a relatively small country, there are three national parks, the largest of which is snowdonia up in the north-west, with snowdon, the highest mountain in thecountry. It is only 1000 meters above sea level but the views from the top are stunning on a clear day, when even the coast of Ireland can be seen. If you don’t feel up to walking to the top, you canget there by steam train: the snowdon mountain railway dates back to the end of last century and is a very popular as well as spectacular way of reaching the summit. There are many mountain enthusiasts,however, who prefer the Brecon Beacons, in the soutnding. Another national park, it does not attract quite as many as visitors as snowdonia, and so it is perhaps easier to get the feeling of havinggot away from it all. A great way to get to know the surrounding area is to take a boat on the delightful Monmouthshire and Brecon canal which is 52 km long. If it is spectacular coastal scenery youare particularly fond of, then of course Wales has an abundance of it, and one of the most beautiful stretches of all is in Pembrokeshire, the extreme south-west tip of the country. There is a superbcoast path here and although relatively few visitors follow it its whole length (290 km), it is well worth walking at least one part of it. If you are travelling by car, of course, you can drive theentire length of the welsh coast in just a couple of days, and there are nay number of picturesque villages to stop over in on the journey.
