Military-based programs can greatly benefit many troubled teens. In many cases when there is a troubled teen in the family, outside help is needed. For this reason, parents looking for help with troubled teens need to be aware of the differences.
On the one hand, a boot camp is a short program that is known by its strictdiscipline and hard physical work. The idea is to break teen defiance and teach a troubled teen respect for authority. It is an intense program that can have dramatic effects in some cases. Boot camps aredefinitely not the answer for all children but teens who have become rebellious or defiant can have a life-changing experience at a boot camp. What is more, they work best when the problem has been caughtearly, such is the case of first-time, nonviolent offenders. However, teens who have had destructive behavior for an extended period of time are less likely to get good results. There are childrenwho need a more clinical setting than a boot camp. If a child has suicidal traits, is severely depressed or has a serious psychiatric diagnosis they would be better placed in a therapeutic boardingschool, a residential treatment center, or in some cases even a psychiatric hospital.
