1. Definición
Si el dominio de una función f es Rn y el codominio es Rm
(m y n quizás iguales), entonces f se denomina
transformación de Rn a Rm, y se dice que fmapea
(aplica o transforma) Rn en Rm. Esto se denota
escribiendo f: Rn→Rm.
Ilustración:
w1 = f1 (x1 , x 2 ,K, x n )
w2 = f 2 (x1 , x 2 ,K, x n )
M
M
wm = f m (x1 , x 2 ,K, x n )
Si denotamos:
T ( x1 , x 2 ,K, x n ) = (w1 , w2 ,K, wm )
Entonces se puede escribir:
T : Rn → Rm
2. Representación matricial
Entonces, una transformación lineal T: Rn→Rm puede estar
definida por ecuaciones de laforma:
w1 = a11 x1 + a12 x 2 + L + a1n x n
w2 = a 21 x1 + a 22 x 2 + L + a 2 n x n

M
M
wm = a m1 x1 + a m 2 x 2 + L + a mn x n
En notación matricial:
w1 a11
w a
2 = 21
M M
wm a m1
a12
a 22
M
am2
L a1n x1
L a 2 n x 2
M M
L a mn x n
En notación más compacta:
W=AX
La matriz A se conoce como matriz asociada a la transformación
(essu representación matricial ).
Ejemplo 1. La transformación lineal T: R4→R3, definida
por las ecuaciones:
w1 = 2 x1 − 3 x 2 + x3 − 5 x 4
w2 = 4 x1 + x 2 − 2 x3 + x 4
w3 = 5 x1 − x 2 + 4 x3
Se puede expresar en forma matricial como:
x1
w1 2 − 3 1 − 5
w = 4 1 − 2 1 x 2
2
x
3
w3 5 − 1 4 0 x
4
La imagen del vector (x1,x2,x3,x4) = (1,-3,0,2), sepuede calcular con:
1
w1 2 − 3 1 − 5 1
w = 4 1 − 2 1 − 3 = 3
0
2
w3 5 − 1 4 0 8
