Lab Report # 9
“What is the role of leaves in transpiration?”
Objective: to use celery stalks to observe the role of leaves in transpiration.
Material and Methods:
 Three celery stalks
Knife
 600ml beaker
 Cream
 Cotton
 Dye

1. Cut the bottom centimeter off each celery stalk.
2. Remove leaves from one stalk.
3. Using cotton, apply cream to both sides of the leavesof one stalk.
4. Place all three stalks in a beaker with a small amount of water and dye.
5. Place on windowsill labeled.
6. Wait until next class to observe results.

Conclusion:Transpiration occurs through leaf stomata. The cream should have reduced transpiration by plugging up the stomata on the leaves. Transpiration occurs more on hot, sunny, windy days and less in the shadeand on cool days. There were two possible problems in this experiment. One is that we used a methylene blue stain instead of food coloring and we have overall low rates of transpiration because weplaced the celery stalks in a shady, cool area, this one was the second. What I learned in this lab is how plants are affected by certain factors in their environment, therefore, they grow,reproduce and develop transpiration in a way that is determinate by their surroundings. One is the climate, they need the sun to grow and its light to accomplish their transpiration. Another factoris how clean they are, like the cream that we used to reduce its transpiration. Now I know that plants are really important and that we must take care of them because they help to clean our air,as food, for clothing, in medicine, in general, they are essential for human life and they too have a process of respiration, growth and reproduction that can be modified if its located in anon-beneficial place.
