El trasplante de órganos, células y tejidos es una invaluable oportunidad de mejorar e incluso de prolongar la vida de aquellos que tienen padecimientos crónicos-degenerativos cuyaconsecuencia es la insuficiencia de algún órgano. En la mayoría de los casos el trasplante resulta ser la única alternativa terapéutica que no sólo resuelve la falla orgánica sino que conserva la vida del paciente en condiciones cercanas al cien por ciento de su estado normal.
En México la Ley General de la Salud establece que todos los mexicanos son donadores de órganos. Sin embargo, la ley tambiénreconoce el derecho de un ciudadano a no ser donador; esto no significa que no se fomente o que la población no tenga acceso a información acerca de este proceso, de hecho se han promovido numerosas campañas de información y orientación ya que se involucran aspectos médicos, sociales, psicológicos, éticos y legales.
