THE TREATY OF BRUSSELS
It was a treaty of mutual defense clause₁ signed by Great Britain , France, Belgium, Holland and Luxembourg on 17th of march 1954.
Signed to avoid₂ a possiblereorganization of Nazi Germany and to have an ally in fear of Soviet Attack.
It was one of the first treaty that announces the birth of a first “European Union”.

On 8th of April 1965, as a matter of fact, itwas signed also the Merger Treaty₃ that is the real beginning of the modern European Union.
It combined the EUROPEAN COAL AND STEEL COMMUNITY₄, the EUROPEAN ATOMIC ENERGY COMMUNITY₅ and theEUROPEAN ECONOMIC COMMUNITY₆ into a single institutional structure. As a matter of fact, they shared common institutions like Parliamentary Assembly and Court of Justice and they was called EuropeanCommunities.

THE TREATY OF LISBON
The treaty signed in Lisbon, like is name said, on 13th of December 2007 was a treaty important for all the challenges that Europe did in the 21st century. As a matterof fact, in the last 50 years Europe is grappling₇ with new issues like globalization, demographic shift, climate change, the need for sustainable energy source and new security threats. For thisreason, the EU countries decided to modernize himself.
This treaty is the result of negotiations between 27 EU member countries in an intergovernmental conference.

Ratified by each country, itprovides, to ensure a more democratic and transparent Europe, that one million citizens from a number of Member States have the possibility to call on the Commission to bring forward new policyproposals.

The most important reforms of this Treaty talk about freedom and human rights.
• The rights and values of freedom, solidarity and security, explained in the Charter of Fundamental Rightsbecomes a European primary law, to ensure a better protection of EU citizens.
• Preservation and reinforcement of the political, economic and social citizens’ freedoms.
