Susan Glaspell’s Trifles. The play started in the kitchenof a farmhouse owned by Mr. John Wright. The kitchen appeared to be untidy. (Acosta page 140) Three men came in the stage, the sheriff Mr. Peters, the county attorney Mr. Henderson and Mr. Hale theneighbor; along with them we see two women nervously walking in the kitchen. The first part of this play is about the men asking questions. The reason of this is to proceed to do an investigation abouta murder. Mr. Wright has been killed on his bed by strangulation. It is a mystery because there is no one that had admitted to the crime. The women remain in the kitchen. The sheriff proceeded to theinvestigation asking mainly questions to the neighbor. “County Attorney: Let’s talk about that later, Mr. Hale. I do want to talk about that, but tell me now just what happened when you got to thehouse. Hale: I didn’t hear or see anything…” (Acosta 140). The investigation continued. Mrs. Wright (Minnie) was on her rocking chair, she replied to Mr.Hale...”cause he’s dead,” says she.” (Acosta 140)I guess this is why Mr. Hale went to look for the Sheriff. Minnie Wright never appears in the stage. It is only reported what she said (Acosta 140).
The play goes on about criticizing the conditionof the kitchen. I can feel the anger on the two women. As Mrs. Wright is being finger pointed for not being a good house keeper.
The most definitive moment in the play, “Trifles”, is the passagestated by Mrs. Hale: “I’d hate to have men coming into my kitchen, snooping around and criticizing” (Glaspell, 2011, p. 142) also (Acosta 142). Mrs. Hale the neighbor and Mrs. Peters the sheriffs’s wife,noticed a thing in disarray which immediately the women realized some sort of brokenness in the relationship within the Wrights.
