Abstract
PLACE AND NETWORKS
Tourism at the Quebrada3 de Humahuaca (Argentina)
This work analyzes the characteristics of the Quebrada de Humahuaca, in northwestern Argentina, as a tourist destination. This is a place acquiring increasingimportance as a
national and international tourist destination, based on a set of tourist attractions of renowned
prestige. Its recent declaration as World Patrimony by UNESCO reinforces this condition. On
the other hand, from different perspectives and by diverse agents, tourist activity is being
promoted as a strategy not only to overcome the economic stagnation and high levels of
poverty of theplace, but also to guarantee the appraisal and preservation of its patrimony.
The question is approached from a description of the place and of tourist practices.
From such a start, a group of significant questions is presented, to understand the situation
and to advance a little beyond the description and wishful-thinking proposals regarding tourist potentialities for development, and the‘natural’ endowment of certain places for tourist
development.
Two nuclear concepts of Geography, that of place and of networks, allow articulating
treatment of the case into a wider discussion, referring to forms of territorial organization
related to tourist practices and their implications for local development. In this sense, the work
analyzes the qualities regarded as the place’s ‘touristattractions’ considered not as its immanent attributes, but as the result of a social process in which the concrete and symbolic
practices that construct such conditions are articulated. What is expected is to contribute to
the understanding of the specificities of a tourist place within a broader framework articulating
diverse social and territorial networks.

Resumen
Este trabajo analiza las características de la Quebrada de Humahuaca, en el Noroeste
argentino, como destino turístico. Se trata de un lugar queviene adquiriendo una importancia
creciente como tal, nacional e internacionalmente, basado en un conjunto de atractivos de
reconocido prestigio; su reciente declaración como Patrimonio de la Humanidad por la UNESCO
refuerza esta condición. Por otra parte, y desde distintas perspectivas y por diversos agentes,
la actividad turística viene siendo incentivada como estrategia para superar elestancamiento
económico y los altos niveles de pobreza del lugar, como así también para garantizar la
valorización y preservación de su patrimonio.
Para abordar esta cuestión se parte de una descripción del lugar y de la práctica
turística, y, a partir de ésto, se presenta un conjunto de cuestiones significativas para comprender
la situación y avanzar un poco más allá de la descripción y laspropuestas voluntaristas
respecto a las potencialidades del turismo para el desarrollo, y de las virtudes “naturales” de
ciertos lugares para el desarrollo turístico.
