Bill meanders up to his apartment building, sifting through the lab papers he'd gotten back earlier that day. Professor Jost had marked all of them with crisp blue ninety-nines and one hundreds; the last one in the stack has a note printed on it, too: Great work, Bill. See me about that lab aide position tomorrow. "Awesome," Bill murmurs, smiling down at the page. With that extra income, he'll beable to buy his mother something really special for her birthday this year.

He pats his pockets absently for his key, scrounging for it until someone clears their throat to his left. Bill glances up quickly.

"Looking for these?" Tom smirks, twirling Bill's keyring on a finger. He's lounging indolently against the building's brick facade.

Bill's eyes widen. "Tom! How did you get those?""Sneaked 'em out of your purse, of course," says Tom smugly.

"It's not a purse," Bill protests, hugging his bag to his side.

"Whatever." Tom waves his hand, catching the keys in his palm. He pushes off from the wall and takes a slow step forward, and Bill gulps. "You should've kept it zipped up," Tom adds. He takes another step, his baggy jeans dragging over the sidewalk.

"I did," saysBill feebly, though it won't make Tom any more apologetic. He holds out a hopeful hand. "Keys? Please?"

Tom advances on him, and Bill stands his ground, even though his heart's racing. "Maybe," says Tom. Even though he and Bill are about the same height, Tom manages to loom over him, probably because he wears his clothes three sizes too large. "What're you gonna do to get 'em, Kaulitz?"Bill bites his lip, glancing down, then back up at Tom through his eyelashes. "I-" he begins.

"Hey! What's going on here?"

Bill hardly dares tear his eyes away from Tom, but he finally does. "Oh, hi, Mrs. Franz," says Bill, lifting a meek hand.

"Is he bothering you, Bill?" Natalie asks bluntly, transferring her load of groceries to the crook of one arm to free the other up. She glares atTom. Tom grins at her. Bill bites his tongue on a groan. Every adult in town counts Tom's Trumper's name as synonymous with 'trouble.'

"We were just talking," Tom informs her. "Gonna come inside with me so we can talk a little more, right, Bill?"

Bill cringes. "Yes, Tom."

Tom beckons, and turns to stroll up to the door as though he owns the place. Before Bill can follow, Natalie catches athis sleeve. "You don't need to go anywhere with him, okay?" she says, quietly so Tom won't hear. Bill cringes again. Tom has very good ears. "It doesn't matter if he's hassling you for money, or homework, or whatever-"

"No, it's okay," Bill assures her. He can feel himself blushing. "We're just going to... talk. Thank you, though."

Natalie still looks doubtful, raising her head to narrow hereyes at Tom. "All right, well. You can tell me if there's anything going on, you know."

"I would," says Bill. He shifts his weight guiltily from one foot to the other.

"It's not right for him to bully you just because you wear makeup, either," Natalie persists, and pauses. She gives him a serious look and says, in an even lower undertone, "Or because you're interested in men, either. Youknow that, right? You've got a lot of support, right here in the building-"

"Right!" Bill says hurriedly. "Thanks, Mrs. Franz, but it's fine. Really." He turns to go but his conscience pulls him to a halt. "Um, did you need help carrying anything?"

"If you need an excuse to get away from him," she begins.

Bill shakes his head hard. "It's okay."

"I only bought a few things, so I'll befine," says Natalie, and she sighs. "Be careful, Bill."

He bobs her a nod and rushes the rest of the way up the walk. Tom's lounging against the door laughing at him. "Stop that," Bill hisses out of the corner of his mouth, which is as close to a scolding as he's ever able to deliver. Tom just snorts and dangles the keys above his head when Bill reaches for them.

"Tom, come on." Bill stands...
