Twitter is a free social networking and micro-blogging service that enables its users to send and read messages known as tweets.
Tweets are text-based posts of up to 140 (onehundred fourty) characters displayed on the user's profile page.
You answer the question, “What’s Happening?” (Before “What are you doing?”) by sending short text messages 140 (one hundred fourty)characters in length, to your friends, or "followers”.
Your tweets are displayed on your profile page, on the home page of each of your followers, and in the Twitter public timeline.

2)The origins of Twitter
* Twitter's origins lie in a "daylongbrainstorming session" that was held by board members of the podcasting company Odeo. The original project code name for the service was twttr (tuitr), an idea that Evan Williams later ascribed to NoahGlass, inspired by Flickr (FLECKER) and the five-character length of American SMS (es em es) short codes.
* The initial programming for Twitter began five years ago.
* Jack Dorsey, one of threevisionary founders of Twitter (the others are Biz Stone and Evan Williams)
* The first Twitter prototype was used as an internal service for Odeo employees and the full version was introducedpublicly on July(julai) 2006 (two thousand six). In October 2006 (two thousand six), Biz Stone, Evan Williams, Dorsey, and other members of Odeo formed Obvious Corporation and acquired Odeo and all ofits assets including Odeo.com and Twitter.com from the investors and shareholders.
